Vaalvi Marathi Movie Review 2023

SPOILERS: Do not miss this dark comedy, go watch it on Zee5 first.

Even in a country of billion plus people, if you go missing, people notice. That is just one of the troubles with disposing off a body. For other troubles, follow this plot.

One thing you know even before watching the movie is that it is going to be a great watch. Paresh Mokashi has been a constantly great storyteller, his dreamy camera renders easily to his wonderfully built sets. Add to this mix, actors like Swapnil Joshi and Subodh Bhave who have been in great form and experimenting with various genres, this movie is a goldmine from the start. 

Having seen Swapnil in a horror movie like Bali, and with such a great plot at hand, it must tempting to set this story as a dark brooding tale. But no, trust Mokashi to build a dark comedy, that is in the league of classics like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. 

Swapnil Joshi's Aniket is not a dark man, he has just walked into the whole mess unwittingly, most likely following his hotheaded mistress, Devika, played by Shivani Surve.  He remains decidedly dark grey though. He could have been an all-out black character but his redemption is in the fact that he was stuck in a loveless marriage for a long time and seems to have given his wife, Avani, (Anita Date) a decent chance to walk out of the marriage through a clean divorce. 

Avani remains vulnerable throughout the movie, dying from the moment we see her to many, many times later. Our heart reaches out to the woman wondering each time if she has died of her own accord and escaped the sadistic plan being laid by her husband. We forgive her infidelity so easily because a childless woman who breeds termites with a maternal urge can only wring at your heart. 

Anshuman also can be forgiven. Despite forgetting the ethics of his profession, he is the only one who constantly seems upset by Avani's actual death. Swapnil Joshi and Subodh Bhave have a great camaraderie and it takes a great director to utilise their talents. Aniket's jumpy energy is greatly enhanced by Anshuman's angry nervousness. It leads to the best comic moments in the movie. Especially wonderful playoff when the gang wants to get rid of the body and Aniket takes time to play the petty customer, earning some great silent reaction by Anshuman. 

The movies first half has the sepiatone-inspired look (which could be called Mokashi's signature,) but the drama in the second half belongs to the city's chaotic energy, not usually associated with Pune, but which exists nonetheless due to the rampant urbanisation. 

Movies like these mirror to us the signs of human foolishness. As an audience, even we don't take a moment to mourn the woman's death. Along with the characters, even we get into the feverish craze of disposing off her body. 

Just like in life, many unrelated people keep walking into this mess. And right when you begin to wonder if there is a part two you didn't know about, comes the end and lifts the movie into one of the greatest in terms of suspense films. 

I will not get into the symbolism of the movie's title, Vaalvi, meaning termites, which is for you to watch and ruminate on your own.

Bali 2021 Marathi Movie Review

If there is one thing that we are all preoccupied with these last three years, it is the concerns of health and integrity of the medical field. While we extended our salutes to frontline workers, our doctors and nurses, we have wondered how all of this meant a large profit for the pharma industry. This is the premise of the Marathi movie Bali starring the versatile actor Swapnil Joshi, Pooja Sawant, and a young talent, Samarth Jadhav. The movie is directed by Vishal Furia. 

A recently widowed, Shrikant, is living a life  of simplicity and nostalgia with his son, Mandar. Their life comes to a pause when a healthy, cricket-playing Mandar is detected with Cancer.

The movie takes place in a modern hospital which is juxtaposed against a stately colonial hospital building which is no longer in use. The small, dimly lit hospital room where Mandar is admitted manages to capture the sense of claustrophobia that we all felt so deeply during the Corona pandemic. The older stone building is a representation of the nobler (older?) side of the medical profession which values patient's health and well being over profit.

The people who crowd this world are the doctors and the hospital staff who speak with professional friendliness that we have come to expect in urban settings. They also express their philanthropic side in wanting to fund the expenses for the treatments of their patients. However, just like everyone else Shrikant seems lost in the unknown language of medical jargon that is thrown at him by people in white coats and stoic faces. It is a struggle we all know too well when we try to understand in a cryptic language what our bodies might be going through. 

In all this, he feels that his son is being drawn to death when he speaks to his dead friend,  Bhaskar, and some nurse called Elizabeth. While the hospital denies any conspiracy calling their visions "Shared Psychosis," Shrikant decides to follow his instinct and get to the root of the matter. Elizabeth helps them discover a pattern of mis-diagnosis and fake treatments that the doctors have been running for a long time. Even the crowdfunding money is pocketed by them. 

If you are wondering who the "bali" or the sacrifice, is in all this, it is the countless people who have suffered a loss like this, people who lost their kin and many who probably are not even aware of the injustice they have suffered. Although Elizabeth's haunting does not last long, the question the movie raises, do. This is an apt time to discuss these universal issues the movie puts a spotlight on, the need for transparency in the field of medicine, right from giving us a clear understanding of how the prescribed medicines affect us in the long term, and ultimately on how to maintain a holistic approach towards health. 

Swapnil has been a much appreciated actor whose evolution we have all watched and applauded, right from his popular romantic movies like Mumbai Pune Mumbai, to the youthful Duniyadari, amongst many. It is great to see him take on darker roles in Samantar, and here in Bali. It is perhaps the sign of the times that we live in when we seek solace in horror and violence. Pooja Sawant's Radhika plays her grey shades with ease. Samarth Jadhav as Mandar is a natural actor, also praise to the kid who plays Bhaskar. A quick paced, haunting movie with a social message, worth a watch and more!

Sarkarnama Marathi Movie Review

आज आपण बोलू सरकारनामा ह्या movie बद्दल.

मराठी सिनेमा ला political dramas ची कमी नाही, अगदी 70s च्या दशका पासून आपल्या कढे solid, hard-hitting political cinemas आहेत. विजय तेंडुलकर ह्यांचा लिखाण, जब्बार पटेल ह्यांचा direction असलेले, सिंहासन आणि सामना हे दोन cult classics तर आलेच.
पण late 80s पासून हळू हळू चांगल्या movies ना ग्रहण लागला. Socio-political movies, म्हणजे आर्ट सिनेमा ज्याला म्हणतात तशे movies तर बनत होते पण त्यांना popularity नव्हती. 90s पर्यंत पण 1-2 वर्षात एखादी चांगली  movie आली तर आली असं घडत होतं. (असं माझं नाही एक्सपर्टस च पण मत आहे, इथे माधुरी दीक्षित पण असच काही बोलताना). मराठी मध्ये farce आणि हिंदी मध्ये mindless romance किंवा revenge drama असा एक अतिरेकच झाला होता. हिंदी movies निदान popular तरी व्हायचे पण मराठी movies audience गमावून बसले होते. निदान शहरात तरी हीच परिस्थिती होती.

अश्या atmosphere मध्ये जेव्हा सरकारनामा सारखा picture आला तेव्हा त्याने Marathi audience ला परत theatre मध्ये आणला. श्रावणी देवधर ह्यांचा डिरेकशन आणि अनिल झंकार ह्यांची story. आणि casting तर काय, एका पेक्षा एक नाव, दिलीप प्रभावळकर, यशवंत दत्त, अजिंक्य देव, आशुतोष गोवारीकर, मिलिंद गुणाजी, सुकन्या कुलकर्णी, अश्विनी भावे, आणि जे तेव्हा नवीन आर्टिस्ट्स होते, ती आज Big league ची नावं झाली आहेत, नंदू माधव, मकरंद अनासपुरे, शर्वरी जमीनीस...

आपण characters बद्दल बोलायच्या आधी, थोडासा movie च्या background बद्दल बोलू. ह्या movie ची सगळ्यात  महत्वाची गोष्ट हि आहे कि हि गोष्ट खऱ्या घटने वर आधारित आहे. जर तुम्ही नवीन generation चे असला तर मी तुम्हाला दोन hint देते. पहिली hint म्हणजे, एके scene मध्ये दिलीप प्रभावळकर असं म्हणतात, "Amchya Ratnagiri oon ek maanus gela tyala pan kasa badnaam karun pathavla." हि एक hint आहे आणि दुसरी म्हणजे movie च्या end ला, म्हणजे credits roll होतात तेव्हा, ज्या journalist ने ह्या story वर खरं काम केलं  होतं त्यांचं नाव आहे.
 
तर हे scandal झालं तेव्हा Congress ची सत्ता होती, picture release झाला तेव्हा पण Congress ची सत्ता होती, तर हि पण एक कमालीची गोष्ट आहे कि अश्या मूवी ला ban केलं नाही, किंवा त्याची publicity होऊन दिली नाही, असं काही झालं नाही.
 
ह्या movie मागचा intent जर आपण शोधायचा म्हणलं तर, असं कि, democracy काय आहे, आणि politicians त्याचा स्वार्थासाठी कसा उपयोग करू शकतात ह्याचा accurate presentation आहे, आणि अश्या परिस्थिती मध्ये journalists आणि police force ह्यांची काय जबाबदारी आहे, हे पण लक्षात येतं. प्रत्येक Indian माणसाने बघायलाच पाहिजे असा हा picture आहे. ह्या movie बद्दल sad करणारी थोडी एक गोष्ट म्हणजे, हि movie किती current वाटते, जे issues ह्या movie मध्ये दाखवले आहेत ते अजून solve झाले नाहीत, पण म्हणूनच ह्या movie ला आपण बघावा.

एक अजून गोष्ट म्हणजे ह्या movie मध्ये common man हे character असं नाहीच.

काशिनाथ घाणेकर ह्यांचा सस्पेन्स सिनेमा म्हणलं कि बऱ्याच लोकांना आधी 'पाठलाग' आठवतो, जो एक अप्रतिम चित्रपट आहेच, पण आज त्यांच्या दुसऱ्या एका सस्पेन्स मूवी बद्दल बोलणार आहे मी. तो चित्रपट म्हणजे 'हा खेळ सावल्यांचा'.

लहानपणी टी.वी.  वर जेव्हा हा पिच्चर लागला होता तेव्हा हिम्मत झाली नव्हती. पण इतक्या वर्षांनी पाहिल्या वर सुद्धा  हा चित्रपट ओउटस्टँडिंग आहे. आणि मी ह्या मूवी ला आताच्या  मूवीझ बरोबर पण compare केलय ok. तर अस काय ageless आहे ह्या मूवी मध्ये ते बघू.

गदिमा नि  लिहलेला आणि वसंत जोगळेकरांनी डायरेक्ट केलेला हा पिच्चर, तर गोष्ट छान असणार ह्या बद्दल तर शंकाच नाही. पण हॉरर सिनेमा नुसत्या स्टोरी वर चालत नाही. गोष्ट वाचणे वेगळ, तो अनुभव आहे, पण कॅमेरा समोर तेच साकारणं vegla. चांगले plot असून farce बनून राहिलेले अनेक मूवीज आहेत जगात.

म्हणून काही हॉरर एलेमेंट्स तर आलेच. ह्या बाबतीत थोडा ट्रॅडिशनल अप्रोच झाला असेल ह्या मूवीचा  पण तरीहि  आपण ओउटस्टँडिंग बद्दल बोलत होतो, ते कस हे बघू.

आधी ते ट्रॅडिशनल एलेमेंट्स काय आहेत.

1) एखादी जुनी किंवा ऐतिहासिक हवेली किंवा वाडा.

2) टिपिकल विलंन म्हणजे सावत्र आई किंवा मुनीमजी.

3) सुंदर, हुशार पण इनसेंट  हेरॉईन.

आणि 4) एखाद्या चांगल्या भूता शिवाय हॉररची मजा काय.

हे ट्रॅडिशनल एलेमेंट्स ह्या करता कि ह्या शिवाय हॉरर स्टोरी लिहिणे कठीण आहे, अशक्य नाही पण कठीण. तर हे तर  आलंच, पण ह्या गोष्टींचे ट्रीटमेंट हे वेगळ करायला हव, नाही तर हेच एलेमेंट्स घेऊन आजकाळचे  हॉरर सिरीझ  नुसते  white lens घातलेली चेटकीण घेऊन, हेरॉईनची  आरडा-ओरडा करतात . तसं  नाहीये इथे.

त्या नंतर इंडियन सिनेमाचा माझा pet peeve म्हणावं  तर गाणी. मला चांगली गाणी आवडतात, मग भाषा कुठलीहि  असो. पण जेव्हा तीच गाणी मूवीजच्या मध्ये घालतात तेव्हा ते स्टोरीला  interrupt करतात असा मला वाटतं. फार कमीच अशे डायरेक्टर्स आहेत ज्यांची गाणी हि dialogue च काम करून जातात.

हा खेळ सावल्यांचा मधली गाणी तशी आहेत. ते त्यांची ची नुसती मनस्थिती सांगत नाहीत पण एक ऍटमॉस्फेर पण क्रीट करतात. इंदुमतीच्या आयुष्यातला एकटे पण, तिची guilt, हे सगळे mood हि  गाणी कॅप्चर  करतात. बॅकग्राऊंड  स्कोर चा pace कधीही  कट न करता हि गाणी  मूवी मध्ये blend होतात.

पण हेही पन्नास टक्केच  काम झालं. कारण ह्या  सगळ्या गोष्टी मध्ये जर  अक्टर्स त्याच्या कसोटी  ला उतरले नाही तर मग  सगळं फसलं असतं. म्हणूनंच ह्या मूवीचे  कास्टिंग  एक्सट्राऑर्डिनरी आहे.

ह्या मूवीच्या वेळेला काशिनाथ घाणेकरांच्या सिनेमा जवळ जवळ सोडूनच दिला होता, ते नाटकताच जास्त काम करू लागले होते, पण ह्या मूवीला त्यांच्या कॅलिबरचाच  माणूस हवा होता. मूवी मध्ये असलेल्या डॉक्टरच मिश्किल स्वभाव कसा गंभीर होतो, त्याची जी body language आहे, ती काशिनाथ घाणेकर आणि ह्या मूवी साठी करी केली आहे, पाठलाग एक सस्पेन्स मूवी आहे पण त्याच्या मध्ये त्यांची body language पूर्ण वेगळी आहे.

इंदुमती म्हणजे अशा काळे तर ह्या मूवीच्या protagonist आहेत, सगळं cinema त्यांच्या भवतीच आहे. अश्या  challenge ला त्या  खऱ्या उतरल्या. इंदुमती चा एक खेळकर स्वभाव आहे, पण त्या  खाली इतके लेयर्स आहेत, guilt चे, अविश्वासाचे, ते प्रत्येक  scene मध्ये इतके independently त्यांनी  साकारले आहेत.

आणि ज्या  outstanding गोष्टी बद्दल आपण आधी बोललो होतो ती इथे आहे. लालन सारंग हि इंदूची  सावत्र आई. तिला चिडकी-मारकुटी   दाखवला असतं तर   काहीच फरक पडला  नस्ता. शेवटी राहायला जागा आणि दोन  वेळचं  जेवण ह्या पलीकडे तिचे काहीच अधिकार  नाहीत. पण अश्या हि character ला  वेगवेगळ्या छटा देऊन  गदिमा नि  आपला  greatness दाखवला  आहे. इंदूला मोठा करताना ती तिला आईचिच माया देते. Property मध्ये वाटा  हवा हि तिची greed नाहीये पण कुठेतरी आपण नंतर एकट्याच  राहून जाऊ हि भीती आहे.

राजा गोसावींचा character कुठेतरी  फक्त comic relief राहून जाईल असं मला  वाटलं होता पण तसं  झाला नाही. ते कसं हे तुम्हीच मूवी मध्ये बघावं. पण त्या character बद्दल जे मला special वाटलं  ते हे ki त्यांनी एका failed actor ची भूमिका करण्या मध्ये अनेक  जुन्या संगीत नाटकांचा  आणि characters चा  उल्लेख केला आहे, त्यातली गाणी म्हणली आहे. फार कमीच लोक जाऊन स्वतः अश्या गोष्टी research करतील तर अश्या सहज पne त्या जुन्या कलेला सम्मान  द्यायचा , त्याची आठवण  करायची हे एक छान  tool आहे.

खरंच standing the test of time ज्याला  म्हणतात तशी हि  movie आहे.

This movie called Ha Khel Savlyancha, which roughly translated means 'a play of shadows' is a psychological drama. The story written by GaDiMa and directed by is a movie ahead of its time. Before we talk about the characters, let us see why the story is so extraordinary.

Despite seemingly traditional tropes of horror in place, this movie achieves to go beyond it. What do I mean by that? Well, let's count some of the traditional horror elements this movie checks out: 

1) A traditional palatial house, check.

2) A standard villain in the form of either a step mother or a munimji, check and check.

3) A vulnerable, kind heroine, check

4) And of course, you wouldn't do horror without a ghost, so check!

So it takes all these standard elements but achieves to become something extraordinary. 

For instance, I love Indian songs, I have always felt like they interrupt the narration. But the songs in the movie blend into the story, in the environment, they do not break the pace of the movie but instead carry it forward.

*वाठार स्टेशन चे नामकरण*

सातारा जिल्ह्यात, कोरेगाव तालुक्यात, पुणे मिरज रेल्वे लाईनवर *वाठार स्टेशन* नावाचे स्टेशन आहे. आश्चर्य म्हणजे त्याच्या आजूबाजूस कोठेही वाठार नावाचे गाव नाही. स्टेशनच्या भोवती आता खूप वस्ती वाढली आहे आणि त्या वस्तीचे गावात रुपांतर झाले आहे. त्या गावाचे नाव *वाठार स्टेशन* असेच आहे.

याचा इतिहास फार रंजक आहे. इंग्रजांनी जेव्हा *पुणे – मिरज रेल्वे* सुरू केली तेंव्हा कोळशाचे इंजिन होते.त्या मध्ये ठराविक वेळेनंतर पाणी भरावे लागायचे. पुणे स्टेशन सोडल्यानंतर आताच्या वाठार स्टेशन पर्यंत आल्यावर पाणी भरणे आवश्क व्हायचे पण तिथे वस्ती किंवा पाण्याची काही सोय नसल्यामुळे इंग्रजांनी तिथे खास  *water Station*  बांधले. त्याचे स्थानिकांनी *वाठार स्टेशन असे नामकरण* केले. स्टेशनमुळे शेजारी वस्ती वाढली आणि गाव अस्तित्वात आले.

त्याच्याच पुढे घाटात *आदर्की* नावाचे स्टेशन आहे. तिथे पण आदर्की नावाचे गाव अस्तित्वात आले. प्रत्यक्षात घाटातील चढामुळे इंजीन थांबवून *दुसरी किल्ली* वापरून पुढे इंजीन चालवाय लागायचे म्हणून इंग्रजांनी तिथे स्टेशन बांधले व त्याचे नाव *other key* असे ठेवले होते.

YZ Marathi Movie Review

 

Have you wondered how Pu La Deshpande's "Narayan" and "Sakharam Gataney" would be like if they were to be born today? What kind of dynamics would they have if they met each other? Here is your chance to watch that. Those are not the characters the movie is portraying but something more fun and complex. In fact this movie tries (and succeeds,) to break stereotypes. Here are two characters that call for a pop cultural relevance for a modern Marathi person.

Before I talk about the second protagonist of this movie, let's talk about the first one. As a society we tend to create characters that seem to uniquely belong to that culture. Like a French archetypal character would be that of a "lonely person living an unhappening life" or American stereotype would be that of a "misunderstood genius". 

  

There are two Marathi cultural archetypes in this movie, one you might miss but other is the protagonist, Gajanan. Gajya can be classified as a Marathi archetype, not that such people do not exist in other cultures, a rough comparison can be made with Arun Pradeep's character from the movie, Choti Si Baat. Is the character Arun Pradeep an original? No, it is influenced by a British character from the comedy School For Scoundrels. So of course, people like this exist in all cultures. They can be briefly understood as single children raised either by over-protective parents or strict disciplinarians. Why I would say this is current for us is because while other cultures have woken up to the disadvantages of raising such a child we are still much behind. Many factors contribute to this, following our culture is the least of which. Mostly this kind of upbringing is the result of wanting the child to have a stable and secure life when they grow up, meaning they don't wear modern clothes, choose show biz as their career and worst still fall in love or something! 

This movie explores the issues with surviving this modern world when you have been raised so. But fret not, because this is not real life our hero manages to discover his awesomeness with a little nudge from a mentor who never had any mould to shape, who was free to grow as he wished, face the sun for brightness or seek a shade if he felt, all his own doing. Battees whose name is never explained, is cool enough to serve in the college canteen when one of the servers falls ill. A place where the teacher needs to be schooled a bit before discovering his own potential.

 In the movie, and in the interviews the actors have said that YZ is an attitude that we all have but somewhere in the process of growing up we stifle it and surrender to the world but they never give tell us what YZ is the abbreviation for perhaps wanting us to fill it in with whatever we wish. The music is also catchy, one of the songs, 'Arrey Krishna arrey Kanha,' is by Shabir Sable and beautifully rendered for new times.

Sarkarnama Marathi Movie Review

Sarkarnama was one of the movies which made a deep impact on me as I was getting interested in Indian politics in college. Watched it again recently and still liked it (minus songs,) unlike some movies that lose their sheen as age and reality catches on with you. My reflection on re-watching it.

Sarkarnama is a political drama. It is a realistic portrayal of the politics in an Indian state which is still feudal at heart and where personal ideals are always in conflict with the larger machinery of the system.

Sarkarnama deals with the issue of builders racket and cement scandal which rocked Maharashtra in the 80s. It has the quintessential ingredient of the underdog against the system. It may be considered one of those realistic movies that state the truth as is but does not end on a pessimistic tone, like the other movies of this genre such as Sinhasan or Dombivli Fast. Unlike these movies where the protagonists begin to lose grip on the situation as it unravels, the protagonist of Sarkarnama remains incorrigible.

The intent is to portray the stratification of power at different levels and the consequential bureaucracy, corruption in the political system and the condition of an ordinary citizen in such state of affairs. As such the director has many balls in the air but the first time director, Shravani Deodhar has a knack of a storyteller and manages the act of driving many branches of plot and giving weightage to array of characters with adroitness. Sarkarnama has an admirable ensemble in its casting of actors to fulfil its vision.

The movie takes time to build momentum but once it gains pace it maintains and leads to justified conclusion which is the success of humility against against power.
